WETL is the radio voice of the South Bend Community School Corporation. Our studios are located at Riley High School and transmitter facilities are located at Jackson Intermediate School at 5001 South Miami Road. WETL offers a radio and TV broadcast in class as part of the Career and Technical Education department and offers dual-credits through Vincennes University. WETL uses high school student announcers, writers, and production engineers and also is a member of the Indiana Association of School Broadcasters.
WETL began broadcasting to the classrooms and homes of South Bend and it's vicinity on November 18, 1958, in the building that now houses Tippecanoe Place restaurant. WETL began with just 250 watts of power
During February of 1970, WETL increased its power from 290 watts to 1300 watts, and then again in 1983 to 3000 watts of stereo power which we operate with to this day. The station was moved to the school administration building at Bronson and Main street.
In 2005, WETL Studios moved from the old administration building on Main St. to it's new home at Riley High School and became Mix 91.7.
In August 2007, WETL began 24-hour, 7 days a week broadcasting..
In the Summer of 2013, WETL purchased new computer automation equipment which was provided by Wide Orbit of San Francisco, allowing students to learn on the latest state of the art equipment.
On December 26th, 2018, WETL launched it’s new website which was also the birth of the station’s online streaming service. The new website also features audio archives and photos of past shows. WETL can be reached on any FM radio within a 50-mile radius of South Bend 91.7 MHz on the radio dial.
